Festivities Calendar

There are many the festivities that fill up the calendar every year in Benalup-Casas Viejas. Every year the neighbors embrace and take part in the festivities, giving to each of them their reason for living.


CARNIVAL.-February or March

During these festivities, the village wears many colors for celebrating the carnival. The performances of local groups and the public announcement of the Sunday of piñata mark the beginning of these festivities which end the next Sunday after a weekend of celebrations for all, the traditional parade and the fireworks.

INDEPENDENCE'S DAY.- March

Benalup-Casas Viejas, before called Benalup de Sidonio, belonged to Medina Sidonia until the 20th March 1991 when it could separate from it and started to be an independent township. There are many activities and events carried out to celebrate it during the cultural week: fishing competition, football and basket competitions, exhibitions, road-safety education days for children. In addition, during the weekend it is celebrated the popular steer release and musical shows in direct. Year after year there are more and more people coming to enjoy the most important celebrations for the people of Benalup.

EASTER.- March or April

Parades:

Palm Sunday: The Donkey Parade

Maundy Thursday: Parade of the Brotherhood Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and María Santísima de los Dolores.

Good Friday: Parochial Stations of the Cross with the Holy Christ of Forgiveness.

The most popular parade is the Nazarene and the Virgen de los Dolores on the Good Friday.

LAS LAGUNETAS PILGRIMAGE.-1st Weekend of May

It is celebrated on behalf of the patroness of the township, Nuestra Señora del Socorro, to which many inhabitants of Benalup accompany by foot or by horse to the small shrine of Las Lagunetas, about 10 km far from the township.

CULTURAL SUMMER.-From June to September

With this initiative several leisure and sports activities are carried out which offer an alternative for summertime.

The most popular activity among those celebrated, is with no doubt, the Indoor Football Marathon which collects people of every age at the beginning of July and for four consecutive days. This marathon celebrated in La Alameda, is a great tradition that goes back to 1979 in history and that every year it is dedicated to a village or association.

FAIRGROUND AND FESTIVITIES OF SANTIAGO AND SANTA ANA.-The end of July

The fairground is celebrated for five days and it starts with the streetlight and during this time it is celebrated the women’s day and the elderly day with a traditional meal. There is no lack of rides which is a delicious for the children.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL SOCORRO PARADE.-15th August

The 15th August the virgin is taken in a parade throughout the street of the centre of the village accompanied of the faithful and the municipal music band.

CHRISTMAS

In these dates it takes place remarkable activities such as the Living Crèche, the profiterole popular, the narrative contest or the parade of the Three Wise Kings.
